Carcinoid Tumors

Carcinoid tumors are uncommon tumors of the gastrointestinal tract that can occur anywhere from the stomach to the rectum. These tumors are most frequently found in the appendix, but are increasingly recognized in the small intestine.

Symptoms

Patients with carcinoid syndrome can have a variety of symptoms. The two most common are flushing and diarrhea. However, patients can also have heart disease.

Treatment

Carcinoid tumors are removed surgically. Surgical options depend on the location of the tumor, so treatment must be customized for each patient. Carcinoid tumors can often be removed laparoscopically. You and your surgeon will decide on the best treatment plan for you.

Endocrine Tumors of the Pancreas

Endocrine tumors of the pancreas are rare tumors that include insulinomas, gastrinomas, VIPomas and non-functioning pancreatic endocrine tumors. Tumors that are small in size and usually benign – such as insulinomas – can frequently be excised through a laparoscopic approach. The endocrine surgery team at Weill Cornell uses intraoperative ultrasound to aid in the identification of pancreatic endocrine tumors and to guide the resection.
