Parathyroid Disease
Parathyroid hormone regulates calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels within the blood and bone. Hyperparathyroidism occurs when there is an enlargement or tumor of one or more of the parathyroid glands. After appropriate localization, our goal is to cure hyperparathyroidism using a minimally invasive approach. The surgery is done under local anesthesia using intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring. Since a circulating parathyroid hormone has a very short half-life, a blood test can be done at the beginning of surgery to measure hormone levels and then again 10 minutes after the gland has been removed to see if there is a drop in its level. An appropriate drop in the parathyroid hormone blood level permits confirmation of a successful operation while the patient is still in the operating room.
