The Cornell-Rogosin program in kidney transplantation was the first kidney transplant program established in New York State – now more than four decades ago. Since that time, over 3,000 transplants have been performed. Today, with over 250 kidney transplants performed in the past year, our program is among the largest in the country offering the very latest medical management protocols and surgical interventions, including laparoscopic techniques, to optimize transplant outcomes.

For the first time in the history of kidney transplantation, we are able to individualize the immune therapy we give to patients and reduce the amount of exposure to immunosuppressive drug regimens over a lifetime utilizing molecular tools developed at Weill Cornell. We have also had an active steroid-avoidance program since 2001. Currently, over 400 transplanted patients are now completely off steroids.

Our expertise extends to pancreas transplantation. In addition to our whole-organ pancreas transplant program, we are the only center in the tri-state region to have performed a successful human islet cell transplant – a minimally invasive procedure to isolate the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin and implant them in a patient in order to treat Type 1 diabetes.

In partnership with the Rogosin Institute – a dedicated comprehensive renal disease facility and one of the top five kidney programs in the nation, as ranked by U.S. News and World Report – our skilled transplant surgeons offer progressive therapeutic options not generally available through other transplantation programs, with rejection and survival rates that surpass the national standards. As a multidisciplinary program, we are able to take advantage of medical and surgical transplantation expertise, as well as close collaborations with researchers that allow us to bring developments in the laboratory directly to benefit our patients.

Our team of surgeons, physicians, nurses, transplant coordinators, social workers, and financial counselors are dedicated to excellence in patient care and to maximizing outcomes for both conventional and unconventional transplants.
