General Surgery Residency Application Process
Appointments to the first year surgical residency are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applications will be accepted from fourth year medical students wishing to complete our five year general surgery residency program. We will sponsor J-1 visas only for qualified applicants. We are participating in ERAS 2009 - ERAS application materials will be distributed from your dean's office in mid June 2008. Your COMPLETE ERAS application will be due in our office via ERAS by November 15, 2008. Because of the number of applications we receive, WE WILL NOT DOWNLOAD MATERIALS FROM ERAS after November 15, 2008 at 5:00pm. In addition, we will not be accepting any hard copies. A completed AAMC-NRMP application for residency, an official copy of your National Board Scores or USMLE scores, an official medical school transcript, Dean's Letter, and at least three letters of references from surgical faculty members familiar with your performance are required. After careful review by the Department's Education Committee, highly selected applicants (generally 90th percentile in Part 1 of the Boards and Honors in Surgery required) will be invited for formal interviews.
Our interviews will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008 and Saturday, January 17, 2009 by invitation only. Unfortunately, there will be no exceptions to these interview dates and any invited applicants must attend an interview date to be considered for a position in our residency program. In addition, we will have a Friday night informal get-together with our current residents. Attendance at this event is not required, but it is a great opportunity to talk to the residents and learn more about our program.
We will be holding limited interviews for our preliminary surgery openings. Please contact us through ERAS only. We will hold interviews after the subspecialty (Urology, ENT and Neurosurgery) Matches take place. We anticipate having limited spots available. At this time we do not know the number of available spots.
