Stipends

The stipends for interns and residents at Weill Medical College of Cornell University are consistent with other medical centers in the New York City area and undergo yearly adjustments to keep pace with cost of living increases. The salary for interns beginning in July 2007 is $46,496.

Housing

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital requires all surgical residents to reside in Hospital owned apartments that are located on York Avenue directly across from the Hospital. The hospital offers modern luxury apartments at a subsidized rate which is universally considered superior to that offered by other medical centers in the city. During the last few weeks in June (intern orientation), Helmsley Hotel housing will be available upon request at a reduced rate.

Orientation

Orientation for 2007 will be held Monday June 11, 2007 through Thursday June 15, 2007. Orientation is mandatory for all incoming Housestaff. Your first day of call will be Saturday, June 16, 2007.

We will be offering BCLS/ACLS training and hopefully ATLS training at some point during Orientation. We strongly encourage you take these courses post medical school and pre residency training.

Medical, Dental, and Malpractice Insurance

Medical insurance is provided for graduate trainees and their dependents free of cost. This insurance includes Blue Cross and Major Medical Insurance that covers both in-patient and out-patient services including free pediatric care, formulary drugs, laboratory and X-ray examinations, emergency room care, and maternity care. Long term disability insurance is also provided free of cost.

A dental plan is provided at no cost. Eligible dependents may be insured at an additional minimal cost. Each intern and resident are provided malpractice insurance free of cost at each hospital they rotate through.

Educational Services

The medical center has extensive resources for the enhancement of graduate education. The Department of Surgery has kept pace with the advancement in modern technology and provides state of the art computer facilities for use by its resident staff. These facilities include bibliographic search, word-processing, database software, image scanners and slide production products designed to increase the efficiency of the surgical resident. All this is located in the Departmental Library which contains up to date collections of surgical journals and texts. A surgical operative log is provided from the ACGME. We anticipate very shortly this program becoming internet based.

Other Benefits

Uniforms and laundry service are provided at no cost. A $100,000 life insurance policy is also provided. Paid Vacation for surgical interns is limited to three weeks to be taken in one two-week block and one one-week block for each year of training thereafter paid vacation consists of four weeks to be taken in two - 2 week blocks.
